These arrangements provide opportunities for jazz soloists to stretch out with suitable backings; space for drummers to solo and, hopefully, some surprise and excitement in contrast to the mass of available published arrangements which are often overscored, fifty years old with the rhythm section used as plodding time keepers.

Glorious medium tempo 4/4 tune that adapts well to big band. Jazz solos for piano and trumpet.
BLUE TRAIN (John Coltrane)
An 8 beat version with solos for alto, trombone, tenor and trumpet.
ELEANOR RIGBY (Lennon & McCartney)
Jazz waltz with a couple of 4/4 bars at the beginning of the middle eight to keep everyone awake. Jazz solos for trombone and trumpet. Requires a strong drummer to make the most of the drum solo passages.
GONE (Gil Evans/Miles Davis)
Porgy and Bess track for conventional big band line up with optional drum feature.
HELLO YOUNG LOVERS (Richard Rogers)
A fast 4/4 with a Latin finish - a great opener with solos for alto and trumpet.

The 10CC hit is translated to a swinger.
LA FIESTA (Chick Corea)
Classic Chick Corea composition with a 6/8 Spanish feel and solos for tenor and trumpet.

Fast "street" samba with solos for trombone and alto.

An 8 beat chart with solos for alto and trombone.

NOTHING PERSONAL (Don Grolnick)
A big band version of the tune written by Don Grolnick for Michael Brecker with solos for tenor and piano.
PICNIC (George Dunning)
A ballad with state of the art harmonies inspired by Andy Laverne.
PLENTY PLENTY SOUL (Quincy Jones)
A Quincy Jones theme that uses Quincy riffs for solo backgrounds. A swinger that some bands play with a funk rhythm. Features trombone, tenor sax and trumpet jazz solos. Powerful build up. Genuine and pirate copies included in many jazz orientated big band libraries (manuscript copy).
ROUND MIDNIGHT (Thelonious Monk)
Baritone sax plays the first 8 bars; close harmony sax soli; trombones have the middle 8; alto sax jazz chorus and interesting development of the tune. (Hard copy only)
SCRAPPLE FROM THE APPLE/HONEYSUCKLE ROSE

Paul Desmond's chart buster hit for the Dave Brubeck Quartet is in 5/4 time and features the alto sax.

A brisk mambo - part of the Medway Jazz Suite.
RAJANS BANQUET (Dave Corsby)
Sections in 11/4, 4/4 and 3/4 but not difficult. National Youth Jazz Orchestra sight read it at a public rehearsal. Features open drum solo in 3/4.
SUBTERRANEANS (Dave Corsby)
Moody Mingus style arrangement with jazz solos for trombone and trumpet and an out of tempo duet of cadenzas between baritone sax and drums. Some haunting voicings.
THIRTY-NINE STEPS (Dave Corsby)
From the Cinque Ports Jazz Suite (a commission for the 1997 Sandwich Festival). Jazz solos for piano, trombone, bass and alto sax. Challenging with an interesting chord sequence. (Hard copy only)
